The Italy 40 (ITA 40) tracks the 40 largest and most liquid companies listed on Borsa Italiana, the Milan Stock Exchange. It is based on the FTSE MIB, Italy's benchmark stock index, which covers the companies that make up most of the Italian stock market's value.

Because it reflects the overall performance of the Italian stock market, the Italy 40 also gives insight into economic and political trends in the country. It is a widely followed benchmark for traders and investors who want exposure to Italian markets or want to assess their investments in the region.

Italy's main stock index has gone through several versions. Its predecessor, the COMIT 30, was launched in 1992. The current 40-company index was introduced in 2004 as the S&P/MIB and has been known as the FTSE MIB since 2009.

Like other major indices, the Italy 40 fell sharply in early 2020 as the COVID-19 pandemic hit global markets, and later recovered. Because it tracks the companies that best represent the Italian market, its price history can offer insight into the state of the Italian economy. Traders can follow the latest news and economic data to make informed trading decisions.

The Italy 40 lets traders follow the performance of 40 of Italy's leading companies with a single instrument. The index includes blue-chip stocks such as Eni, Enel and Intesa Sanpaolo, along with other large companies from sectors such as banking, energy, industry and luxury goods. This makes it a popular choice for traders who want to diversify and gain exposure to the Italian economy.

An index can't be bought directly, but you can trade the Italy 40 through derivatives such as CFDs with TradingMoon. All trading involves risk, so make sure you do your own research before opening a position.
