Fraport is a German transport company situated in Frankfurt, supplying best-in-class management and operational airport solutions since 1924. Despite being headquartered in Frankfurt and largely operating out of Frankfurt Airport, Fraport has an interest in multiple other airports worldwide.

Fraport has full ownership of Slovenia’s Ljubljana Airport, as well as two airports in Brazil (Fortaleza and Porto Alegre). It also has a controlling stake in Peru’s Jorge Chavez International Airport and Bulgaria’s Burgas and Varna airports.

In December 2015, Fraport also secured a lucrative contract with the Greek government to manage up to 14 regional airports across the mainland and the Greek islands for a minimum period of 40 years. Fraport’s main specialism is ground handling, both at its own airports and third-party operated airports.

The all-time history of the Fraport share price is one of steady growth. At the end of 2022, Fraport shares were worth more than 16% higher than they were in 2001. It’s fair to say that the Fraport share price would have generated much bigger all-time growth had it not been for the Covid-19 pandemic, which shook the air travel industry to its very core.

Between 2001 and 2018, Fraport shares were typically viewed as a bullish holding among investors. The Fraport share price rose from the lows of €17 in January 2003 to highs of €96.58 in January 2018. The rapid emergence of the Covid-19 pandemic saw Fraport shares plunge from €69.82 in February 2020 to €36.66 in March 2020. It fell further still to €31.02 in October of that year.

The price of Fraport shares recovered somewhat through 2021, as lockdown restrictions began to ease and air travel became more accessible once again. In November 2021, it peaked at €67.40 per share. However, the general trend in recent years has been a bearish one, with Fraport shares down over 56% between 2017-2022.

Fraport’s competitors include some of the biggest international airport businesses on the planet. Frankfurt Airport is one of the biggest aviation hubs in Europe, so the likes of Heathrow Airport Holdings (formerly known as BAA), must surely be considered a major competitor.

Elsewhere in Europe, other major airport businesses include Flughafen Zuerich, which owns and manages Zurich Airport in the Swiss city. Copenhagen Airports is another major airport business, owning and managing Copenhagen and Roskilde airports.
